Pezzella opens up on toughest career stretch

World champion defender Germán Pezzella has broken his silence about one of the most challenging periods of his career. He recounted that in the lead-up to an injury that sidelined him for over seven months, he was going through a 'very difficult personal time'. The 34-year-old River Plate player was open about the process, admitting he was not able to enjoy the present he had imagined upon his return to the club. The ligament rupture he suffered against Independiente in August 2025 ultimately served as a turning point. In his reflection, he noted that the exposure and frenzy of professional football often isolate a player and make him lose sight of what is essential. Now in the final stage of his recovery, the world champion assured that he is now in a different situation, calmer and more focused on his day-to-day life. At River, they already consider him close to a return, with chances of featuring in an upcoming squad, while the player emphasizes that he has learned to value the little everyday things as a central part of his recovery. Along these lines, he explained that he was on 'a dark path' and needed to stop to rebuild himself from another place, both physically and emotionally. Pezzella also admitted that, despite returning to River after a significant stint in Europe and winning the World Cup with the Argentine national team, he was not able to feel fulfilled.
